Setting up POP Email in Thunderbird

We strongly recommend using the more modern IMAP protocol to retrieve your email (setup instructions for IMAP can be found here). But if needed Thunderbird can be configured for the older, more limited POP protocol. To do so:

First, ensure that you are running the most current version of Thunderbird.

  1. Click on ‘Local Folders’
  2. Find the ‘Accounts’ section. Under ‘Create a new account:’ select ‘Email’.

In the ‘Welcome to Thunderbird’ screen, click on the ‘Skip this and use my existing email’ button.

On the ‘Mail Account Setup’ page, enter:

  • Your name - The name you want to appear on your emails
  • Email address: Your DSL Extreme email address. IE: [email protected]
  • Password: Your DSL Extreme password. Type carefully.
  • Check the 'Remember password' checkbox

Click ‘Continue’

Thunderbird will try to set itself up automatically by looking up our server settings in Thunderbird’s database. This should take about one minute.

After Thunderbird has finished, it will display the found settings.

By default, 'IMAP (remote folders)" will be selected.
  1. Select "POP (keep mail on your computer)."
  2. Click on the ‘Done’ button.

After checking for the correct password, Thunderbird will return to the main screen. Your new account will show up in the left column.
